In short

Modern Day Pioneer keeps your family’s pictures, recordings and stories on your own computer. The app does not collect, send or sell anything about you or your family. There are no accounts, no advertising and no tracking.

What stays on your computer

• Your Journey: every picture, recording, video, note, name, date and place you add is kept in the Journey folder you choose. The app copies files in; your originals are never changed.
• Backups and exports: a backup (.zip) or an exported family history is written only where you choose, such as a USB drive or a folder. What you do with it afterwards, for example sharing it with relatives, is up to you.
• Speech to text: recordings are turned into text on your own computer. Your voice is never sent anywhere to be transcribed.
• Settings: your name on this device (shown in the change history) and the last Journey you opened are kept in the app’s settings on this computer.

When the app uses the internet

• Downloading the speech model: if you choose to, the app downloads a speech model file from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). Only the file is fetched; nothing about you or your Journey is sent. Hugging Face’s own privacy policy covers that download.
• Checking for a newer version: once a day, and when you press “Check for a newer version” in Settings, the app asks GitHub (github.com) for the newest version number on the public download page. Only that question is sent; nothing about you or your Journey goes with it. The app never installs anything by itself.
• Send feedback: this opens an email in your own email program, with the app’s version filled in. Nothing is sent unless you send that email.
• Nothing else. The app and the exported history both work with no internet.

What the export shows

The exported history shows what you put into memories. By default it leaves out the dates of people who may still be living and shows only the name of places you mark as exact, such as the family home. You can change both in Settings. Pictures, recordings and notes not yet in a memory are left out.

Children

The app is for families and does not collect information from anyone, including children.
